Another place you might try is eBay, one of the largest online auction sites in the universe. Instead of buying from a merchant, you may find it cheaper to buy a used kit from a previous wine maker whos deciding to get out of the business. Another similar outlet is Amazon.com. They dont auction items, but they are a gigantic source for items.

So, what makes a great wine? It’s very simple: it you like it, it’s good. If you love it, it’s great. Wine is about enjoyment. Scrap notions of image or popularity or other nonsense.

The mid priced ones are usually as good or better in my opinion! And German Rieslings are tasty, naturally slightly lower in alcohol and calories too. For a slightly sweet sparkling wine that may amaze you, try an Italian Moscato d’Asti – simple breathe taking, and never expensive.

This is a partial list. Try different wines and see what you like. You are bound to find plenty of inexpensive wines that you truly enjoy with just a little effort.

When ordering wine for a wedding, caterers will often charge one of two ways: by the number of guests, or by the amount of alcohol consumed. It may appear more financially frugal to pay by the amount of wine consumed; chances are not everyone at your reception – your old Aunt Molly with anti-alcohol beliefs, your Uncle John who’s recently back on the wagon, your underage cousin with a bad fake I.D. – will drink. However, be forewarned that caterers, when charging you by the amount of wine consumed, may get a little bit tricky, certain you are more concerned with keeping red wine away from the white wedding dress than you are with what the wait staff is doing.

Some caterers attempt to make it appear as if the guest list consumed more wine than they actually did, concerning both the people paying for the wedding and Alcoholics Anonymous.

One way they do this is by removing glasses from tables, even when the glasses are filled to the brim with wine. For example, if a guest gets a fresh glass of wine and then decides she wants to go out on the dance floor, leaving the wine to greet her upon her return, she will more likely come back to an empty table. This is because, while she was out dancing, the wait staff, circling like vultures, came over and threw out her full glass, forcing her to eventually fetch another new glass, and ultimately adding cost to the reception.

Know How Much to Buy

Running out of alcohol at a wedding reception ranks up near divorce on the spectrum of marriage, causing people, with opened mouths and clenched fists, to ponder why. Because of this, it’s essential that you know how much wine to buy if the caterers aren’t providing it for you. Obviously, the best way to figure this is by the amount of people attending, and the drinking habits of your guests. For a wedding with a guest list that is made of the-run-of-the-mill drinking crowd – the partiers, the socialites, the intellectuals – more wine should be purchased than if the guest list is made up of people – the oblivious, the unaware, the masochists – who don’t generally engage in wine drinking.

When deciding to buy red wine or white wine, making things pretty even is usually the best way to go. Typically, half of the people drinking wine will drink white and half will drink red. Chardonnay and Cabernet are usually the most popular types, with White Zinfandel getting an honorable mention. Men, sticking to their blood thirsty carnivorous ways, routinely drink more red wine while women routinely drink more white wine.

The demographics of your guest list, however, aren’t the only things to consider when purchasing wine. You should also consider what you are serving as the main course of dinner. For instance, if serving seafood, chicken, or pork, you may want to stock up on a nice white wine. If serving pastas, red meat, or anything drenched in red sauces, a cellar of nice red wine may need to be invaded.

Shop Around

It may seem like the wine purchased for a wedding reception needs to be expensive, as if serving cheap wine is an ominous sign of marital failure. However, this isn’t the case at all. Several expensive tasting wines can be purchased for a reasonable price, keeping guests happy and the married couple free of the burden of an outrageous wedding bill.

If you shop around, you may find that good wines for reasonable amounts are actually in abundance. From the Korbel Sparkling Natural Chardonnay to the Gruet Brut Blanc de Blancs, good wine doesn’t need to make the bride and groom consider charging a general admission fee to get into their ceremony.

Wine and weddings is as natural a union as husband and wife, particularly for those who are attempting to save a little money on their bar tab. Preface: Ive never done this before, and im totally inexperienced about brewing. I did a little bit of research online and found this was the easiest and cheapest way to brew wine, which seems like the easiest of all alcoholic drinks to make. Follow these directions at your own risk

Like the title says, this method of brewing is not expensive (cost me roughly $12. This will make me 2-3 gallons of wine. maybe more), but the returns arent for connoisseurs. This is for cheap-asses, college kids, and 15 yr olds who cant buy anything themselves. If you do it right, its enjoyable, cheap, easy to do, and most importantly, alcoholic. Plus, it only takes a maximum of 2 weeks to fully ferment!!!

Step 1:
Buy ingredients. Get the cheap stuff. It doesnt matter what quality it is because its hobo-wine.
I made a gallon jug of this. The recipe calls for:

2 cans of juice concentrate (room temp) I chose welchs concorde grape. You should be able to use any type of concentrate like strawberry, kiwi-whatever etc. Two juice concentrates makes 1 gallon.

• 2-3 cups of sugar
• water
• water container (I used a water jug that was 60 cents at the store, plus I got to use the water)
• Active Dry yeast
• bleach
• funnel
• rubber band
• balloon

Step 2:
Sterilize everything youre going to use to keep the fermenting wine in. You dont want unwanted bacteria growing in your wine, it ruins it. Bleach out your funnel and your jug. Rinse well, and wash with dish soap. Air dry.

Step 3:
Go ahead and bring your water to a near boil. What I did was let the water boil just for a bit to kill anything in it (just in case), and then I took it off the heat and let it cool. I heated mine in separate pots because I didnt have any large enough to hold it all.

Step 4:

While youre waiting for your water to heat, go ahead and add your room temperature juice concentrate to the clean, dry jug. Use the funnel if you need it.

Step 5:
As the hot water cools, dissolve 2-3 cups of sugar in the water. Most recipies Ive read say 2 is fine, but i added 3 so the yeast had enough nutrients and so that the wine would be sweeter. Stir while pouring.

Step 6:
Activate the yeast. Follow the instructions on the back of the packet. For me, I added 1 teaspoon of sugar into a separate bowl along with 1/4 cup of water at 100-110 degrees Farenheit. Add the yeast to the concoction and stir briefly. Let sit for 10 minutes. The yeast should be very frothy now.

Step 7:
Pour the dissolved sugar-water into the jug thats holding the juice concentrate. Your juice/sugarwater might be warm. Cool it off a little by placing the jug in the sink and fill the sink with cool water. When you introduce your yeast to their syrupy mix, it cant be too hot or it will kill the yeast and ruin your project. I waited until the jug was just warm to the touch. 80-90 degrees i estimate.

Step 8:

When the mix is cooled enough, add the yeast to the mix.

Step 9:
Cap the jug containing your sugar water, juice concentrate, and yeast and shake violently. Try not to spill. Do it enough just to mix everything up.

Step 10:
Remove the cap, place a balloon over the top to allow for expansion. The yeasties produce CO2, and its got to go somewhere. You cannot introduce air to the mix or it will ruin it/make vinegar. Bad bad bad! Some people use valves, some make tubing that runs from the jug to a glass of water so air cannot get in, but it allows the CO2 to escape. I use a balloon.
Note: when using a balloon, make sure it doesnt over inflate and pop. Again, this will ruin your batch.
If you want you can put a rubber band over the ballon to further secure it. If you really want to i suppose you can tape it as well. I didnt.

Step 11:
Keep your jug in a relatively warm place (room temp). The yeast can handle 60 degrees, but i wouldnt want to chance it. Also, i wouldnt expose it to direct sunlight.

There it is! I just brewed it up tonight, now I just wait 10-14 days and then i can

Step 12:
ENJOY!

When youre done fermenting, you can siphon the good stuff out while leaving the clumpy yeast in the jug. To repeat, just make sure to sterilize again and youre good to go.

Again, im way not a pro at this. I just thought some of you might want to try this with me and we can help eachother along. If you know what youre doing, post in here and give advice. Id love to hear it.

Moreover, it could fail under the weight of even a small wine collection….and the result could be the breakage of your budding wine collection and a huge mess. Cheap wine racks will generally not have the attention to detail that makes wine racks esthetically pleasing. In addition, it might have mismatched wood grains, which would show if stained. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule.

By adding only a few dollars to your total cost, however, you would be able to purchase a strong durable wood wine rack or small stylish metal one and have it around for many years. For pennies on the dollar, you could purchase a better quality item.

If you want to buy a small wine rack that only holds a few bottles, you can get some stunning ones for a very inexpensive price. Some of these will sit atop a table in your kitchen or can be easily mounted on the wall.

In short, there are many quality low cost wine racks available for every budget, so don’t make the mistake of buying a poorly designed one one just to save a few dollars. Start with a small cedar or fir wine rack, for example, and add to it each year. They are completely stackable, and very durable. Or buy a small metal one that is pleasing to the eye, holds a few bottles, and costs in the range of only 50 dollars or so….and will last for years.

To the surprise of some market analysts, Nielsen reported wine sales last October were up 7.1 percent over a year ago. One of the fastest growing segments was wine for less than $15, especially less than $7. The best news? Cheap wines are better than they used to be.This is great news to cheapskates. First the good news: Australia’s wine grape growers are looking at another big vintage, probably close to last year’s 1.837 million tonnes, meaning consumers will continue to enjoy plentiful cheap wine – the glut continues.

And now the bad news: Australia’s wine grape growers are looking at another big vintage, probably close to last year’s 1.837 million tonnes, meaning our wine industry remains under stress, with vineyard values falling, plenty of smaller wineries going under and our biggest wine makers being steadily reduced to slave-status by the supermarket giants.

But wait, there’s more: We’re exporting less wine and doing it at lower prices. The mainstay UK market has turned particularly sour – supermarket gorilla Tesco almost makes Woolworths and Coles appear supplier-friendly.

And despite the high quality and cheapness of the product, Australians are drinking less wine – even at a time when many of us might think we could use a drink. Gen Y is a particular failure for the wine industry, but the industry seems to be so scared of promoting alcohol consumption that it’s not game to market to them, leaving the field wide open for beer and spirits.

Yet with all the market signals being thrown at them, never mind water becoming more scarce and expensive, growers are refusing to take the hint to grow less.

No wonder Foster’s has reportedly scrapped the idea of selling off its wine division – no-one wants it.

At the smaller end, there aren’t as many investment bankers on multimillion dollar salaries to prop up vineyard prices.

This is not the place and I am not the author for a 10,000-word treatise on the fate of the Australian wine industry, but the looming vintage should be sending urgent messages to what’s left of the listed wine companies – as well as reminding consumers that there’s no need to rush out and stock the cellar as prices aren’t going to rise.

Exports drop

The latest Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation figures show wine exports in the year to November 30 dropped by 13% to 695 million litres while the average price received fell 6% to $3.59 a litre – meaning the total value plunged 17% to $2.49 billion.

Of course most of the past year featured a rising Australian dollar and there are glimmers of hope since the Aussie walked off the cliff, but a pick-up in volume in November over August was mainly thanks to a resurgence in bulk wine exports to the UK and US – the cheap and barely profitable end of the business.

And while the big markets that made Australian wine’s export success story have turned down, new markets are showing promising growth, albeit off very low bases. China now is about where the UK was for us at the start of the 1990s and they’re paying an average of $5 a litre. Looks like the two-buck-chuck market is yet to take off in Beijing.

Back in the first three vintages of those 90s, before wine became an export hero, Australian wine grape production was running at about 600,000 tonnes a year. A decade later it had more than doubled to over 1.4 million tonnes.

And that’s about what the industry thinks it should profitably produce, but instead it ran away to a record 1.925 million tonnes in 2004-05 – helped in part by tax-driven managed investment schemes that made money for promoters but precious little for investors.

Drought dropped the vintage to just under 1.4 million tonnes in 06-07 but then a funny thing happened down at the irrigation channel ahead of last summer’s crop: with drought continuing, grape growers expected another small vintage and therefore good prices, so they went out and bought water, resulting in a crop of 1.837 million tonnes.

The indications I received while chairing last month’s Winemakers’ Federation outlook conference was that the water market continues to function whatever we might read about environmental flows and a similar size crop is expected this summer.

The bemusing aspect is that the grape growers and wine makers en masse want their industry to grow fewer grapes – but each of them wants someone else to be the ones to do it. Some growers are calling for Federal Government assistance – i.e. a handout for ripping out vines. My suspicion is that that hope keeps many marginal operators producing – you wouldn’t stop growing today if you thought Canberra might pay you to stop tomorrow.

The hardheads believe one way or another, production eventually will be reduced, if not with assistance from the Government, then with assistance from receivers and administrators.

Which ever way, it looks much better to be a consumer than a producer. Those of us pulling corks and unscrewing caps are just trying to help as best we can.
