Last chance to vote for OC Surfer of the Year

The 2010 OC Surfer of the Year contest is coming to an end, with the last chance to vote at midnight on July 30.

This year’s contest – presented by the U.S. Open of Surfing – has generated about 470,000 votes for top local surfers in four categories: Male Shortboarder, Female Shortboarder, Longboarder, and Rising Star Male.

Leading the votes this year is once again Brett Simpson, who has generated more than 200,000 votes as of Tuesday afternoon. Following him is fellow Hurley rider Brad Ettinger, the only other surfer to pass the 100,000 vote mark.

It could be another winning year for Courtney Conlogue – who along with Simpson – also took home the U.S. Open of Surfing championship last year.

Longboarder Joe Aaron is once again showing he has the support in that category, and newcomer from San Clemente High School Trevor Thornton is the top vote generator for the Rising Star Male division.

There will no doubt – as we’ve seen in previous years – be a splurge in voting up to the last minute.

And don’t forget – this is the last chance to enter and win a 2010 Outback Subaru. One lucky voter will win the car.

The winners in each category for the third annual OC Surfer of the Year contest will be honored alongside legends of the sport at 10 a.m. on Aug. 6 at the Surfers Hall of Fame in Huntington Beach, at Huntington Surf and Sport on Main and Pacific Coast Highway.

Surfline: Waves this weekend

Surfline.com forecaster Kevin Wallis gives us a look at what conditions at the beach will be like this week:

Unfortunately, it looks like the morning gloom will continue through the last few days of July and possibly into early August. Expect to see morning low clouds each of the next few days, which will be slow to clear in the afternoons. Beach temps will reach the mid to upper 60s each day, with water temps having recently cooled a bit. North Orange County is seeing water temps in the low to mid 60s, with South Orange County generally a couple of degrees warmer.

Wind will be light Wednesday through Friday mornings, with moderate west wind building each afternoon.

Waves:

A small run of south-southwest swell build in over the second half of the week. Surf sizes will average 2-3′ (knee to waist high) from Wednesday through Friday, with top breaks picking up the occasional wave to 4′ (chest high) on Thursday and Friday when the small swell will be strongest. A slightly larger south-southwest swell is expected as we move through the upcoming weekend. Be sure to stay tuned to Surfline.com for all the latest details on these upcoming swells. UPDATE: Free Angels baseball tickets if you give blood

UPDATE: If you looked at this previously, make sure to refresh your browser. The dates I listed earlier that I thought were the game dates were actually the days that you can give blood! Sorry. Here’s the corrected information:

The Angels want your blood. Really, they do.

If you like the idea of helping people by donating blood, and you like baseball, then this is a deal for you:

Give blood at the bloodmobile set up at the Big Red Helmet at Angel Stadium of Anaheim, and they’ll give you a voucher good for two tickets you can use later to selected Angels baseball games.

That appeals to me because I’ve been feeling guilty about not having donated blood for a long time, and also feeling guilty about not taking my kids to an Angels game this year, so, hey, I can relieve my guilt on two fronts at once! How’s that for a great deal.

The Angels have set aside certain sections from which you can choose your seats. After you donate your blood, you can walk over to the ticket booth and use your vouchers to get the tickets to the game of your choice.

You have to be able to spend 45 minutes or so in Anaheim between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. on the day you donate.

Individuals may only donate once every 56 days. You must be at least 17 years old to donate. There are other rules about who can donate, check the website for more specifics.

Please complete and submit the online form to request a date and time to donate. A representative from the blood donor center will contact you to confirm your donation appointment.

How to reach the Angels box office directly (for your information, but they don’t have info on the blood drive):

You can call the Angels main office phone number at 714-940-2000 and ask to be transferred to the box office. It is located at 2000 Gene Autry Way, Anaheim(easiest to enter off Orangewood) next to the big red hat at Angels Stadium.

The box office is open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 Monday through Saturday, when the Angels are out of town. When they’re in town, on game days the box office is open until the seventh inning.

Cheap tips for the OC Fair

Here are tips from my boss, who lives in Costa Mesa, about going to the OC Fair!So Marla , the deals goddess, said at some point last month that going to the Orange County Fair winds up costing her family almost as much as it does to go to Disneyland.

I couldn’t believe that was accurate. I decided she must not be taking advantage of the specials and promotions available at the Fair. So here are a few tips to save you money at the Fair this year:

Parking: I’m lucky because we live close enough to the Fairgrounds to bike over, which saves us money and hassle. So if you live in Costa Mesa or Newport Beach, bike to the Fair. Or park farther away for free and walk over.

Admission: There is no end to the promotions. Hopefully you fit into one of these groups. Active duty military with ID, free admission every day. Kids 12 and under get in free every Thursday. Seniors 60 or older get in half price every Friday. Every Wednesday offers an opportunity to help others and get in free. This week if you bring five canned food items to donate to Second Harvest Food Bank and OC Food Bank, you get in free. Next Wednesday, you can bring a new children’s book or three gently used children’s books to benefit the Orange County Department of Education and BookEnds and you’ll get in free. Check here for all the Wednesday promotions.

Rides: I don’t have teenagers or preteens yet, but apparently this is where you can get into trouble in terms of cost of the Fair. So make sure you go on Fridays before 7 p.m. when all the rides are $1.

Food: We all want to taste the food, but not kill ourselves with fat and cholesterol in the process right?

So the food tastings option is a great way to get small samples of your favorite Fair food for $1.

You can do that on Fridays from noon-4 p.m. We also try to make sure to eat a regular meal before we go to the Fair so that we’re not starving and lured into $8 hot dogs.

Since my daughter adores the Fair and we’re likely to have to go more than twice this season, we got the Super Passes. If you think you’re going to go regularly, this might be a good option for you too.

I think the key to having a good time at the Fair is to make sure you see the stuff you care about the most — petting zoo or concerts, rides or the table setting contest — and not spend much time trying to do everything. Focus on your favorites, take advantage of the specials that apply best for your family, try to snack instead of eating a whole meal there and have fun!

If you’ve ever wanted to see the world’s top surfers battle it out at exotic breaks, but don’t know the logistics of where to go or how to get there, then check out this story written by OC Register’s Gary A. Warner.

The Travel story highlights when and where to go, insider tips on how to get there and other things you can do in the various areas besides watching the surfers take on waves.

Here’s a snippet from the story:

Pro surfing loves, needs, celebrates the ocean with its contests. But the ocean doesn’t care. There’s no guaranteed 1 p.m. kickoff. No timeouts. No penalties. No do-overs. A guy’s career might be hanging by a thread, needing a great heat to stay alive, and all the Pacific or Atlantic or Indian can come up with is some ankle-slapping slop.
