Better yet it’s dinner and they call it Kids Eat Free (or at least Really Cheap Anyways). That’s good news for parents of picky eaters and kids that eat, and eat (and eat!). From national restaurants chains to mom and pops all across the U.S. more and more Kids Eat Free menus are popping up.

Kids Eat Free promotions will run on various days of the week which is nice because there is usually something every night of the week. Many restaurants will use their less busy days (i.e. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday). The following guidelines should help give you a better understanding of how your kids can eat for FREE:

Not all franchises require their franchisees to follow specific operating guidelines. You might find that one national restaurant in your area runs the promotion while others do not. It’s always best to call before making big plans.

Most kid’s nights will run during the week. The best day seems to be Tuesday, although you should be able to find a restaurant for every day of the week.

Check to see how many kids can eat with each paying adult. Usually it will be one to two children per adult entre.

Be sure to ask the age limit. At many restaurants, children are considered to be ages 10 and under. At other restaurants you will find that it is 12-13 years old (but don’t tell your tweens that).

Check to see if the restaurant has a specific time for the offer. Some eateries will run kids eat free all day, while others are just dinner hours.

Examples of where you might find a Kids Eat Free Night in your area include Monday night at Quaker Steak and Lube, Back Yard Burgers or Ihop; Tuesday night at Beef O’ Brady’s, Denny’s or Lonestar; Wednesday night at Damon’s, Luby’s; Thursday night at KC Masterpiece. Friday night at The American Caf; Saturday night Denny’s and Sunday check Planet Sub, Hooters and Salsaritas.

Some restaurants run their Kid’s Eat Free night a little different. They aren’t free but you will be able to order from the kid’s menu at a discount. Generally the prices are between $.99 and $1.99. One of the favorites is Golden Corral Buffet which runs their Kids Eat Cheap night on Tuesday. Kids eat for $1.99 and little ones 3 and under eat free. Buffalo Wild Wings offers a $.99 Kid’s Menu on Monday’s, and Picadilly’s has kid’s meals on Saturday’s that range from $.99-$1.99.

This is just a small sample of restaurants that offer Kids Eat Free menus throughout the week.

A great website to assist you in finding even more is http://coupondivas.com/ which offers a list of Kids Eat Free Restaurants by day. You can also sign up for their newsletter to receive updates as new offers are added or changed! Bon Appetite!!

Yesterday at Stewart’s, I got a 1935 wheat cent in “very fine” condition. I recently got a silver Roosevelt dime in change at Burger King. A silver lining to hard times is that you can literally find silver falling into your hands, as people short on cash empty piggy banks, pickle jars, wine bottles and such containers of coins they’ve been saving for years, perhaps decades.
This makes for a good time to start your kids on a healthy hobby for fun or profit that doesn’t involve simulated mayhem or need batteries or an electric cord: collecting coins. Here are a few tips on getting started:

1. Each night, have the family gather and empty their pockets of the coins they’ve accumulated during the day. Sit together and decide what you would like to start collecting. It could be something simple like the 50 state quarters that are still being issued. You can try to collect all 50 states, including one from each mint issuing them: Philadelphia, with a P mint mark; and Denver, with a D mint mark.

2. To help give them the numismatic (coin-collecting) bug, you might buy a classic blue folder to hold the coins you accumulate. When I was a kid, I assembled a library of the Whitman coin folders for everything from Indian Head cents to Morgan silver dollars. You get a thrill each time you are able to fill a slot with a coin you’ve been looking for. The Whitman folders (and there are other brands) have come a long way in the nearly half-century since I started collecting. By the way, my collection isn’t really worth much, but I still keep it in an undisclosed secure location that would make Dick Cheney proud.

3. Get kids interested in history in a way that will make them want to learn more and more. For instance, my great-grandmother gave me an 1893 Columbian Exposition half-dollar. She was given the coin as payment for a load of wash she did many decades ago. (She was born in 1883, 10 years before the exhibition opened a year behind schedule in Chicago in 1893, marking 400 years since Columbus’ discovery of the New World.) The exposition was also called the Chicago World’s Fair. This silver coin shows a bust of Columbus on the front (obverse) and a depiction of his flag ship, the Santa Maria, and globes of the Western and Eastern hemispheres on the back (reverse). This is an unusual situation in that I know the last business transaction this 116-old-coin completed. But it also leads to curiosity about Columbus and the exhibition that honored his place in history.

4. Help kids see the beauty of coins. Sure they have material value, but their artistic value can be spectacular. Many people think the St. Gaudens double eagle ($20 gold piece), minted from 1907-33, is the most beautiful U.S. coin ever created. My favorite is instead the Walking Liberty half-dollar. It was minted from 1916-47. It was replaced with the relatively ugly Franklin half, which itself gave way to the Kennedy half. Congress rushed that coin into circulation in 1964, shortly after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on Nov. 20, 1963. You can see the possibilities for encouraging kids to use their curiosity to delve into the history behind the coins they collect.

5. Good places to collect coins that are no longer in circulation are coin stores, coin shows and swap meets. When I was a kid, Woolworth’s five-and-dime stores used to sell collectible coins. My first coin was a two-cent piece that my parents got for me in Utica.

6. Other early coins in my collection came from my great-grandparents. Get your kids to ask their older relatives if they have any old coins they have saved. Many people have at least an old Morgan dollar, minted from 1878 to 1904. These coins fascinate me because I imagine them being used by actual Old West cowboys to buy a few drinks at a saloon, to stable their horse, buy a six-iron, you know, cowboy stuff. (TV was full of westerns in my youth.)

7. The best place to buy coins might be eBay. That’s where I bought my favorite coin, a 1794 large cent, minted in Philadelphia during the U.S. Mint’s second year of operation. I love to imagine the Founding Fathers having this coin in their purses. It literally could have passed through the hands of Thomas Jefferson, John Adams or George Washington. One reason I like eBay is because you know there are knowledgeable people bidding on these coins, so overpricing is less likely. You even have a chance to get a bargain if you bidding skills are good.

8. NEVER clean a coin – it ruins its value!

9. Coin collecting is something the family can do together. And who knows, when times get hard, you might want to dip into your collection to help make ends meet. Just don’t give them away at face value, like the people who spent that 1935 penny or silver Roosevelt dime. Coin collection book for kids
