There are a number of services that most facilities do not offer and if they do you have to pay extra for them. With the current health care system breaking apart at the seams and Governor Schwarzenegger proposing additional cuts, the availability of some of these services may become scarce, so what do you do when the need arises for them? You certainly cannot ask a parent or grandparent who has done so much for you to go without in their golden years.

What if ? It’s a question that needs to be asked but is often overlooked. What if your loved one needs physical therapy? Is it provided by the facility and, if it is, is it included in your fee? What about companionship, or basic housekeeping, a ride to the store, or help keeping track of doctor’s appointments and medications? Most of these are included but the question should always be asked. With cut-backs everywhere and adult day care services on the verge of elimination some of the services you would expect to be standard may not be available at all.

In legislation proposed by the Governor earlier this year, some of the services slated for elimination are ALL of the Caregiver Resource Centers in California, along with support services including Adult Day Health Centers, Alzheimer’s Research Centers, certain In-Home Support Services, Linkages Programs, PACE (Program of All Inclusive Care for the Elderly), and more. If you currently have a loved one in an assisted living facility the services they are getting now may not be available by the end of the year.

The solution to the problem is a marriage of convenience which is seen more frequently now between assisted living facilities and independent care giver organizations. Independents which generally specialize in bringing companionship and care to homebound seniors are now going into assisted living facilities to provide the services that they no longer are able to. These services may have been cut in many cases due to lack of funding or they may have never been available at all.

Orange County has already had to deal with the burst of the housing bubble, a freezing of financial assistance from the banks, a high foreclosure rate, and rising unemployment. Now we are faced with the elimination of essential services for our senior citizens. This is a problem that needs to be addressed right away. Some of the basic necessities of a dignified life for our seniors are at risk and independent care givers can provide them. If you have a parent or grandparent in an assisted living facility and they are not receiving all of the services they need, check into independent care to supplement the facility’s programs. You may find that many of the other residents are already taking advantage of this highly effective mix of resources.

Abraham Lincoln’s famous words have lived on for ages after they were spoken. It’s quite possible that he had no idea the impact those words would make on societies born well after his death. But how true those words are; “And in the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.”

Retirement doesn’t signal the end of life, only the end of an era. For those who have embraced the many changes that have surely visited them throughout a long and healthy existence, life after retirement can be active and full of satisfying activities. Growing into your seventies and eighties is oftentimes a life event that you and your family tiptoe towards, worried about your health and safety. If you are the retiree, the worry about health and safety is most likely more on the part of your children than on your part. Adult children worry that their parents are well taken care of, and yet don’t want to take away the valuable independence that they have enjoyed for so many years. It is a situation that, working closely together, can be handled with grace and dignity.

Maintaining independence is vitally important to the emotional well-being of our senior community. Those who care for and are planning the living arrangements of seniors will do well to keep this in mind when working with them. These are people who have lived through years of ups and downs; decades of raising children and holding down successful careers. The latter years of a person’s life are still full of potential and vitality; that is a fact.

Staying in your own home as you grow older is something that you may have strong feelings about. Your home is as much a part of your life as your family. It is where so many memories live that leaving it is almost always a last resort. Obtaining quality in-home care when it becomes necessary can alleviate fears that may go along with independent living. Knowing that you have a caretaker that comes and goes as needed can give you and your family a peace of mind, and allow you to live more freely doing the things that make you happy.

There are so many activities that seniors can engage in that will not only give them something to do, but will also continue to enhance their lives. After all, learning and experiencing new things is good for everyone, no matter what their age. Making this a fulfilling part of a healthy life is easily done when a family has taken the time to engage in discussions about the importance of independence to aging parents. Once reliable and caring in-home care is arranged, both seniors and their families breathe easier and can get back to the task of living life to the fullest.

As important as it is to enjoy continued independence, seniors must not forget to get out and enjoy the freedom they have in this stage of life. The kids are grown and well into their child rearing years. You have contributed to the work force for decades and enjoyed the sweet success of your career. Now is the time to think of something you may immensely enjoy doing. Perhaps you’ve always wanted to learn a new language. It’s not too late to begin learning! In fact, studies have shown that seniors who spend time on educational activities have better cognitive function and retain their memories longer than seniors who do not. In addition to the health benefits, attending educational programs give seniors the opportunity to interact with others of their age group and younger people as well. Engaging in a group activity also helps alleviate the isolation and depression that inactive seniors often develop.

Here are a few pulsating activities to keep you young at heart: Eight is Enough . . . Bridge Team Games, Pie Socials, Play Poker, Greeting Card recycling, Group Trail Walks, Group Bike Rides, karaoke, Digital Photography…

If language is not your thing, there are still a wide variety of options open to you. Exercise classes, chess clubs, even square dancing or ballroom dancing are all thriving classes in our local community center. The bottom line is that as you have embraced every other life change that has come your way, embracing the changes that come along with retirement and senior living is what will keep you the most healthy and happy.

Attitude determines so much in life. This is something all who have lived long have discovered. When you and your family can look at this time in life as just another adventure in a long journey, then you can find the things that make your heart sing as loudly as it did when you were just beginning. Making sure that everything at home is taken care of by a home health agency you are comfortable with leaves the doors wide open for you to branch out and continue leaving your mark on the world. Life does not stop at a certain age, it goes on as long as you continue walking down that road.

Oxidative stress is a major problem underlying many diseases today. Our bodies combat oxidative stress with anti-oxidant systems coded by our genes and the aided by anti-oxidants from our diet. Kid's meals are typically deficient of anti-oxidant protection and many even contribute to increased oxidative stress. Studies show that 1 in 5 high school aged kids already has damage from oxidative stress in their arteries.

There is a war raging within our bodies every day. One the one side are environmental toxins that we breathe, drink and eat and on the other side are our bodies defense mechanisms that fight to keep us healthy. This is not new. There are natural toxins all over our environment. Things like disease causing germs, radon gas and other natural contaminants that get into our food, water and the air we breathe. This is no reason to get alarmed. It has been going on for thousands of years.

However, there is substantial evidence that environmental toxins have dramatically increased over the past century, providing an increased threat. Our bodies defense systems just dont adapt at the same rate. It is also problematic that the foods we eat have declined in nutritional quality. This puts us and our kids at greater risk since our bodies require this nutrition for ammunition against the environmental threats.

Casualty Report

When we think about things like hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) and adult – onset diabetes (type II diabetes), we dont typically think of these as childhood illnesses. However, children are diagnosed with chronic illness more and more all the time. Some would argue that this is simply due to an improvement in early diagnosis techniques. While this is certainly a factor, it is undeniable that the rate of many chronic diseases is increasing in children and adults alike.

A large national study called the PDAY study (predeterminants of atherosclerosis in youth) actually showed that 1 in 5 high school age kids today, already have the beginning stages of atherosclerosis and the majority of youth have fatty streaks in their arteries. They may not feel them yet, but they are there, looming over their future. Another study predicts that 1 out of 3 kids born after the year 2000 will develop diabetes due to current nutritional trends in the United States. This is an alarming trend for parents that dont want to see their kids get sick; and an alarming trend for a nation that cant handle the increasing burden of ill health in its citizens. We can do something to change this.

We must reverse these trends. Kids are not immune to chronic disease caused by poor lifestyle choices. I hear all the time theyre just kids, they can handle it. This is absolutely false. Lack of quality nutrition in our kids is allowing the slow accumulation of damage to mount up in their veins and organs until one day it hits a point where they are diagnosed with disease.

Chronic illnesses that will catch up to them in adulthood are not the only problems. There are many immediate threats as well. Poor nutrition is associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), asthma, eczema and behavioral problems. This is not to say that poor nutrition is the sole cause of all of these disorders but it can definitely contribute. In many cases, improved diet and quality nutritional supplementation can reverse or at least improve several childhood disorders and can prevent chronic illness in adulthood.

Oxidative Stress Threatens Your Childrens Future

One of the major on-going battles is to keep damage from oxidative stress at a minimum. Many experts now believe that damage due to oxidative stress underlies the cause of several chronic degenerative diseases. There are certainly other factors at work, like genetics, but oxidative stress appears to be a significant player.

What is oxidative stress? Its a simple concept really. Oxygen is a double-edged sword. We absolutely need it to survive but its also what ends up killing us in the end. Without it, we cannot produce the high-energy demands of our physiology. But the highly reactive properties of oxygen that make it so useful also make it very dangerous.

We mostly use oxygen in a reaction to convert foods we eat into a useful energy molecule, called ATP, which is the primary fuel that our body uses. However, the process of using oxygen to make ATP actually release very damaging molecules called free radicals. These little suckers can actually rip through your cells and create tons of havoc, damaging all kinds of things including your DNA. This process is called oxidative stress and if left unchecked can lead to all kinds of disease like cancer, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimers dementia, Parkinsons disease and lots more.

The damage caused by oxidative stress slowly accumulates until it is bad enough to cause disease. It really just depends on where the greatest damage happens that determines the type of disease. For example, oxidative damage in the eye can lead to macular degeneration; in the joints to arthritis; in the arteries to atherosclerosis. That is where genetics comes in. Oxidative stress will be more likely to get a foothold wherever you are genetically weakest. But the underlying molecular mechanisms of these varied disease can have a similar root cause too much oxidative stress.

Anti-Oxidants to Your Childrens Rescue

Luckily, our bodies have ways to deal with oxidative stress. We have genes that have the specific job of capturing these free radicals, before they wreak too much havoc, and minimize the damage. This defense mechanism is sometimes called our anti-oxidant system.

Many vitamins and plant-derived nutrients, like vitamin C and vitamin E also act as anti-oxidants and help our bodies natural anti-oxidant systems keep free radicals under control. This is why it is so incredibly important to get enough of these nutrients into our bodies because without them damage from oxidative stress accumulates over time until it causes major health problems. The bodys own systems are not sufficient. We must arm them with anti-oxidant molecules from our diet and supplements to optimize our defenses.

Its all about risk. Every time you allow your kids to eat poorly you allow a little damage and every time you encourage your kids to eat well you add a little protection to deal with or reverse the damage. If you continually tip the scales in favor of the damage, your kids will have a high probability of health problems.

What you eat plays an important role in determining your bone health. Specifically, consuming adequate amounts of calcium (1000 mg for adults ages 19-50) and vitamin D (200 IU for adults ages 19-50) is essential for strong bones. Magnesium and vitamin K are also important for bone health. Here are 10 tasty sources.

Bone-Friendly Nutrient: Calcium

Calcium can help to build stronger, denser bones early in life and keep bones healthy as we grow older. It is a mineral that is essential for life, yet the majority of Americans do not get adequate calcium on a daily basis.

Calcium Source: Yogurt

Yogurt is an excellent source of calcium. Many brands contain about 40 percent of daily calcium needs based on an 8-oz. serving. (We recommend low-fat and fat-free.) Plus, yogurt is a tasty and versatile food. Have it for breakfast topped with two tablespoons of granola, as a snack on its own, or create a terrific healthy dessert of Fruit Salad with Honey-Yogurt Sauce.

Calcium Source: Cheddar Cheese

Just 1.5 oz. of reduced-fat cheddar cheese will meet about 30 percent of your daily recommendation for calcium. Add a slice to sandwiches, salads, or enjoy as a snack with crackers. Another delicious way to incorporate cheddar into your diet is with Chili-Cheese Black Bean Enchiladas.

Calcium Source: Milk

No surprise here, milk is another excellent source of calcium. An 8-oz. glass of milk contains about one-third of your daily calcium needs. (Skim or low-fat is best.) Most brands of milk are fortified with vitamin D, another nutrient essential for bone health. (More on vitamin D in a minute). If you’re not a dairy fan or are unable to tolerate lactose, look for a fortified soymilk, or try a lactose-free milk, like Lactaid. Don’t like milk by itself? Try our Vanilla Honey-Nut Smoothie, which gets a nutrient boost from soybeans, tofu, and frozen yogurt.

Calcium Source: Tofu

A great non-dairy source of calcium is tofu. Just one-half cup of firm tofu fortified with calcium has about 20 percent of the daily recommendation for calcium. (Not every tofu is made this way, so look for labels that declare it’s a good source of calcium.) Tofu is also a good source of protein and a wonderful addition to any stir-fry.

Key Nutrient: Vitamin D

Vitamin D also plays a critical role in building and protecting your bones. Vitamin D promotes calcium absorption, and studies show that people with low levels of vitamin D have lower bone density or bone mass. They are also more likely to break bones as they age. Vitamin D is naturally present in very few foods, but you can get it from sunshine, and more foods are being fortified with this very important nutrient. While cod liver oil is perhaps the best natural food source of Vitamin D, there are other, better-tasting options.

Vitamin D Source: Salmon

Salmon is one of the best natural sources of vitamin D. Just 3.5 oz. of cooked salmon supplies about 90 percent of your daily vitamin D needs. What’s more, salmon is a great source of protein and heart-healthy omega-3 fats. Try to have at least one salmon dish every week. For a delicious dinner meal, try this Sizzling Salmon-and-Spinach Salad with Soy Vinaigrette.

Vitamin D Source: Canned Tuna

If weekly fresh fish is out of your budget, an economical source of vitamin D is canned tuna. Three ounces of canned tuna contains approximately 50% of your daily vitamin D requirement. Concern has been raised about mercury levels in some fish and shellfish, such as tuna. However most experts agree that the benefits of moderate fish consumption (up to 12 oz. of low-mercury fish per week) far outweigh the risks.

Vitamin D Source: Fortified Cereal

Some ready-to-eat cereals are fortified with vitamin D. Check the labels and look for products that have at least 10 percent of the daily value of this important nutrient.

Essential Mineral: Magnesium

The mineral magnesium provides many functions within the body, and one of them is to help keep bones strong (50 percent of body magnesium is found in bone). Eating a variety of foods can help to ensure adequate magnesium intake. Women over 30 should aim for 320mg of magnesium daily, while men need 400 to 420mg. These numbers are easy to obtain from a variety of legumes, nuts, whole grains, and dark leafy vegetables (spinach and quinoa are especially good sources). Read on for a couple of our favorite magnesium-rich snacks.

Magnesium Source: Almonds

Just one ounce of almonds (a small handful–about 24) provides about 20 percent of your daily magnesium needs. Almonds make a terrific snack on their own (just remember to watch portion size; one ounce of almonds contains about 164 calories, 3.4 grams fiber, and 15 grams fat, though only 1 gram saturated fat). They’re also great as a topping for cereal, yogurt, or salads.

Magnesium Source: Soybeans

Soybeans are another excellent source of magnesium. About ½ cup cooked soybeans will meet approximately 20 percent of your daily magnesium needs. Edamame–plain steamed soybeans–make a great snack. You can incorporate them in to salads and stir-fries for added protein and texture. For a delicious and different twist on a classic Middle Eastern dip, try our Soybean Hummus recipe.

Vitamin K serves many functions within the body, but mounting scientific research has linked this important nutrient with bone health. Recent studies indicate that vitamin K may help prevent bone resorption and adequate dietary intake is likely necessary to prevent bone loss. Vitamin K needs can be met by consuming a diet rich in leafy greens.

Vitamin K Source: Leafy Greens

Leafy greens such as kale, spinach, Swiss chard and collard greens are very high in Vitamin K. Just 1/2 cup of these greens, cooked, can contain more than 500% of the recommended daily amount of vitamin K.

Important health note: Misuse of vitamin K in supplement form can produce toxicity, and if you are taking the blood thinning drug Coumidin or any other anticoagulant drugs please check with your doctor before increasing or decreasing your vitamin K intake. When obtained from food sources, 500% of the DV may sound like a lot, but vitamin K consumed through food rarely produces toxicity.

In selecting a healthier way to eat going back to nature and following it as closely as possible is the best way to go. Learning a more natural way of cooking vegetables is the first step on that road. There is no doubt that nature never intended us to use cooked foods at all. Raw foods are healthier because they contain living cells which are fully or partially destroyed in the process of cooking. Similarly, most of the vitamins in the vegetables are destroyed and the chemical arrangement of the minerals is changed when you cook them.

However, since many vegetables are repulsive when eaten raw, they have to be cooked. In needs of creating a balance between raw and overcooked vegetables the following tips will guide you to enjoy a desirable variety of foods and yet be able to eat healthier.

1. Eat raw vegetables. Try to eat your vegetables as close to their natural state as possible.

2. If you must cook your vegetables try not to overcook them. Most people tend to overcook their vegetables, yet the nutritional value of vegetables, which is created in the growing process, is easily destroyed in the cooking process. All vegetables should be cooked far less than is the habit in most homes today.

3. Do not peel your vegetables. Most people have the habit of peeling their vegetables before cooking them, but they should not be peeled. Potatoes in particular should never be peeled for the most valuable elements lie directly under or in the skin.

4. Use the vegetables immediately after cutting or shedding them so they retain the most amount of Vitamin C. The Vitamin C content of vegetables is lost at an extremely fast rate once the vegetables fibers have been cut or bruised. You can also cut them into larger pieces if cut or bruised. You can also cut them into larger pieces if you are not eating them right away, this will retain more of the vitamin.

5. Very often the water in which the vegetables are cooked is more valuable to your health than the vegetables themselves. So remember, don’t throw away the water used to cook the vegetables, drink it or save it for next day’s soup. Such water is rich in the vitamins extracted from the vegetables during the cooking process.

6. The worst method of cooking vegetables is to fry them. Frying vegetables is very harmful to your health as they absorb huge amounts of fats, become difficult to digest and leave a great deal of dead matter in your blood after having been assimilated.

7. The best way of cooking vegetables is steaming them with as little water as possible and for the shortest time possible.

8. In order to retain the most nutritional value when cooking your vegetables there are three things you should know about the cooking of each vegetable:

     (1) How long should it be cooked?,

     (2) How much water should be used for cooking each vegetable? and

     (3) Should the pot be closed or open during the steaming? The following table will guide you in building a diet that will remain rich in vitamins and minerals.

The needed updating and renewal of my prescription was at hand. While we chatted during my examination I asked the Doctor a few questions concerning my past prognosis (history). She didn’t have a clue as to what I was talking about. I said, “Doc you’ve been treating me for more than eight years and treated for a major illness.” “What do you think or how do you feel about the way the treatment has turned out? The look of someone who was in the twilight zone came upon her face, the look of someone who has traded places with my doctor. I described to her the diagnosis and prognosis of the total experience up to now. Her demeanor made an abrupt change to OK, now I remember mode.

The doctor then started to explain the how and why of their patient records keeping system. The patient records were kept on an outdated wall roll out filing system in the administration portion of this very large and prominent city hospital clinic. I asked, “Doc, why is it that you don’t have my records at hand for review as opposed to making a whole new file on me?” She then explained if a patient has not come into the office for more than two years, the hard copy files go to a central repository for storage. And soon after the records arrive to the repository, before long, they are destroyed. I then asked the doctor what would happen if a medical professional needed to access a patient’s medical history to assist in the diagnosis and comparison of a new illness? The only answer that she could give me was “the hospital could not afford to store old patient files.” I asked, isn’t that a dangerous practice? She replied, yes.

Albeit, my doctor agreed with the need for an Electronic Medical Records keeping system for all hospitals, especially one as large as this.

I was appalled at the lack of technology that major hospitals and medical facilities in many cities and counties do not incorporate within their day-to-day responsibilities. Not to mention my anger of the danger factor in not having access to patient records, regardless of how long it’s been between doctor visits. An EMR System will aid in the saving of life, the treatment and prevention of illnesses throughout this planet, its’ people, animals, and life forms.

In my first report, “IT and BI”, I mentioned the steps beginning technology students should take in order to ascend to the highest level of career achievements in the world of computers.

The first step is to understand the workings of computers and the mind set that needs to coincide with the brainwashing (training) it takes to adapt to its languages and communication networks. I do not consider myself to be an expert in the profession.

However, I have arrived at a comfortable level within the IT and BI world to which I am happy to play a part. Like many people (especially older learners) it had to begin somewhere. That somewhere was the desire to become computer savvy. It’s grown from there…and continues to grow. I continue to eat, sleep, and breathe IT and BI.

Our country, as well as the rest of the world, is in need of the EMR System. The system needs operators for ETL and other operational functions. This system will be implemented whether hospital administrators like it or not…whether they can afford it or not. And the people to maintain and operate the functions of said system is inevitable. As an avid Data Miner and RDBMS Practitioner, I am constantly studying the trends, reports, articles, and the technology of EMR-Data Base Systems as well as Networks and Communications Hardware and Software. You do not have to be a scholar and/or technological genius to learn the stuff.

All you need is the desire and willingness to believe that you can function within the world of computers. I’ve included some data with regard to the beginner in mind within this report. Should you be one of those individuals who cannot afford to get into a classroom/training setting, I recommend that you go to a book store or library and gain all of the pertinent (and not so pertinent) material that you can get your hands on, read, study, and practice (find someone that will allow you to utilize their PC or Mac, if you don’t have one) using the software and its hardware to learn the languages and applications.

Here are some beginning data that will help you to understand PCs and Networks:

Management Information Systems (MIS)

The difference between hardware and Software:
Hardware are/is the things that you can see, touch, and feel, i.e., a central processor, a printer, a monitor, a variety of electronic and machine parts; physical components; Software is the languages and operating systems; the controlling and support of a computer system; instructions, programs, disks; usable and replaceable portions of the total system.

Some characteristics of the processing functions are: data is changed or transformed into information for comparison, to sort, to calculate, etc.

The difference between data and information is: data is defined as raw material entered into the processing system, i.e., the keyboard; information is processed data that is processed into meaningful information.

The definition of S.O.P. (Standard Operating Process) is protocol, the rules or conventions governing the format and transmission of messages exchanged between computer and terminal devices.

Key categories of I.S.T. (Information Systems Technical) are: hardware, software, storage, and telecommunications.

What is T.P.S? (Transportation Process Systems) – the systems that controls the scheduling, routing, inventory, materials, and transportation information.

M.I.S. (Management Information Systems) are oriented almost exclusively towards internal organizational events; a system that aides management in making, carrying out, and controlling decisions, planning and management; aides management in the performance of its job; getting the right information to the right people at the right time.

The definition of D.S.S. (Decision Support System) characteristics are:
Aides in making decisions under conditions of uncertainty; analyzes situations, charts and other visual exhibits can be transmitted and displayed when necessary to clarify a point; access to files, makes and accurate forecast, prepares short term profit plans and long term / range projections, provides preplanning information in budget preparations, calculates variances, triggers revised forecasts, acts as early warning system, accomplishes all the proceeding with great speed and accuracy.

The definition of E.S.S. (Executive Support Systems) is: the executive support system is geared for an individual executive or a group of executives involving a separate personal data file, stripped or created from a main file geared to the needs of the individual executive.

Knowledge and Information based economy characteristics are (high tech – low hopes):
Shifting job market polarized wages and income, service and high tech jobs may be causing poverty instead of curing it, a shift from physical work to head work, 75% of jobs were in manufacturing, but lost to the service industry, and the computer revolution, the information revolution, the electronic revolution, the second industry revolution.

An information system can be defined as a system the aides in making and carrying out controlling devices based on the physical facilities that are available; A computer, a calculator, an adding machine, a book, etc.

The group responsible for monitoring affirms daily activities is called the International Data Corporation.

Characteristics of the Age of Information:
The first year when PC’s were available commercially, of Americans jobs were in manufacturing. Expectations for the future were to live better than people of the past. Circa 1950. Interest rates were averaging 2%.

High Tech – Low Hopes:
Knowledge based on information gathered on the economy shift.

Pascal Lebowitz developed the first adding machine.

Processing characteristics:
To perform and manipulate operations on data.

Voice recognition would be an example of an input device – accepting data then analyzing the sound input.

What does DOS stand for and why do we need it?
DOS – Disk Operating System, a program that contains the controlling signals for the computer. A DOS System supervises and operates the subsequent programs loaded in the computer. It is the main central program used by the computer.

The difference between data and information: data is raw material entered into a computer system; information is processed data; information with understandable meaning.

The characteristics of the processing functions is raw data is transformed into logical information through a process of analytical and manipulated functions.

The 5 functions of a computer are:
The ability to accept data is the input device where data is issued through an analytical and manipulative function as well as automatically executing programs of instructions in order to perform mathematical logistics in a series of functions known as processing.

Output is a manipulative operation on data and reporting the results of its findings to the computer operator aiding to his/her performance of a job and/or personal information and/or entertainment. The five function are input, storage, process, execute, and output.

General Systems

An environment consisting of many personal computers, workstations, and servers, inter-connected by high-speed networks, and dispersed over small or large geographical areas.

The attractions if such a system are widely recognized; each user has autonomy and control over the fate of his/her own resources. Each user benefits from file sharing information and data. Connectivity with servers allows sharing of expensive resources (disk forms of desktop services).

Visual Basic is an IDE (Integrated Development Environment) that allows for the creation of applications designed to run as the windows operating environment. These applications are GUI (Graphic User Interface) based programs that use the event driven program model (Multiple Components Writing to Control/Run Programming – Procedural Programming).

Operating Systems

The collection of computer programs that control the interaction of the user and the computer hardware is called the operating system (OS). The operating system of a computer is often compared to the conductor of and orchestra, for it is the software that is responsible for directing all computer operations and managing all computer resources.

Usually, part of the operating system is stored permanently in a read-only (ROM) chip so that it is available as soon as the computer is turned on. A computer can look at the values in read-only memory but cannot write new values to the chip. The ROM-based partition of the OS contains the instructions necessary for loading into memory the rest of the operating system code, which typically resides on a disk.

Loading the operating system into memory is called booting the computer. Now push the on button.

Most of us now live in a world that contains many potential “pollutants”. We inhale, ingest, and with our sense organs energetically “take in” many mentally and physically agitating substances. The body-mind does its best to detox these inputs, but it often gets overloaded. One of our primary toxin removal/clearing centers is the liver. But when the liver is challenged by an overload of toxins or is subject to disease, we can do certain things to help it be healthier and function better.

Before we discuss milk thistle, I offer some holistic ideas which will complement your care and be very helpful. One of the signs of liver congestion, according to Chinese medicine, is erupting (or simmering) anger. Holistic practices and therapies may help convert that “anger energy” into health-promoting, loving, peaceful energy–your true nature.

Nutrition: Decrease or eliminate alcohol, caffeine and tobacco, consume a diet full of fresh vegetables, drink plenty of warm or hot water, eat more beans and fish and less meat and dairy, decrease the intake of processed foods or anything which contains trans fats or partially hydrogenated oils, and chew your food slowly, lovingly, and calmly.

Mind-Body: Meditation, gentle focused breathing, gentle exercise such as walking, swimming, and yoga, positive visualization and imagery, reading and viewing inspirational media. Even if you have never meditated or believe you “can’t” give this a try–you will probably leave with a greater sense of peace and sleep quite well that night.

Energy support and holistic healing: Reiki, acupuncture, massage, cranio-sacral therapy.

Personal: Doing creative projects you enjoy, volunteering, sharing in loving relationships, laughing, hugging, playing with animals, time in nature, journaling… I remember a section in Elizabeth Gilbert’s book Eat, Pray, Love. The old healer she spent time with in Indonesia instructed her to smile in her liver for one hour each day. Now THAT is energy medicine.

Herbal Medicine: There is a powerful herbal medicine called milk thistle. It is considered to be one of the earth’s most potent liver tonics. Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) contains a flavonoid (flavonoids are often called Vitamin P) called silymarin. Silymarin helps the liver regenerate liver cells. By stimulating the growth of new, healthy liver cells, the liver is able to heal and do its many jobs much more effectively. Silymarin may be used to help heal liver diseases such as cirrhosis (often caused by excessive alcohol ingestion), hepatitis, or general liver inflammation. It can be taken by those people who smoke or who are inhaling (or ingesting) environmental pollutants/toxins to help the liver function better. If you are experiencing stress or are taking medications, your liver is probably in need of the supports we are discussing. In the days when I practiced anesthesiology I was often inhaling the anesthetics used for general anesthesia. I knew it couldn’t be “healthy” for me. If I were still doing that job today I would consider taking silymarin to help my liver stay in balance, my body/immune system strong.

Silymarin may also help heal physical problems such as psoriasis and chronic yeast infections–both offering signs that the liver may not be functioning optimally. Certainly for anyone receiving chemotherapy or radiation therapy it could be considered a very helpful liver detoxifier, one which could help prevent hepatoxicity from the therapies. Although milk thistle does have antioxidant effects, which is something to consider as chemo is trying to “kill off cells”, I have a sense that it could help the liver clear away the potentially overwhelming input of toxins (both from the therapy and the cell breakdown due to the therapy) while not hampering the powerful cancer cell death abilities of the therapies. This would be a personal choice ideally done in conjunction and consultation with the oncologist and a holistic practitioner. Milk thistle may also help heal liver metastases. Research is currently being done to determine whether silymarin could be used to help directly heal cancer in the liver.

Silymarin has been found to decrease death due to ingestion of the deathcap mushroom if taken within 48 hours of eating the mushroom. It also increases production of bile by the liver to help in the uptake of fats.

How to take Milk Thistle: Silymarin may be taken in capsule form, tincture, or as milk thistle tea. I’ve had the tea and it tastes like oats–quite gentle.

I would be interested in your experience of this herb–please share your stories of how milk thistle/silymarin helped or did not support your health.
