Cheap tips for the OC Fair

Here are tips from my boss, who lives in Costa Mesa, about going to the OC Fair!So Marla , the deals goddess, said at some point last month that going to the Orange County Fair winds up costing her family almost as much as it does to go to Disneyland.

I couldn’t believe that was accurate. I decided she must not be taking advantage of the specials and promotions available at the Fair. So here are a few tips to save you money at the Fair this year:

Parking: I’m lucky because we live close enough to the Fairgrounds to bike over, which saves us money and hassle. So if you live in Costa Mesa or Newport Beach, bike to the Fair. Or park farther away for free and walk over.

Admission: There is no end to the promotions. Hopefully you fit into one of these groups. Active duty military with ID, free admission every day. Kids 12 and under get in free every Thursday. Seniors 60 or older get in half price every Friday. Every Wednesday offers an opportunity to help others and get in free. This week if you bring five canned food items to donate to Second Harvest Food Bank and OC Food Bank, you get in free. Next Wednesday, you can bring a new children’s book or three gently used children’s books to benefit the Orange County Department of Education and BookEnds and you’ll get in free. Check here for all the Wednesday promotions.

Rides: I don’t have teenagers or preteens yet, but apparently this is where you can get into trouble in terms of cost of the Fair. So make sure you go on Fridays before 7 p.m. when all the rides are $1.

Food: We all want to taste the food, but not kill ourselves with fat and cholesterol in the process right?

So the food tastings option is a great way to get small samples of your favorite Fair food for $1.

You can do that on Fridays from noon-4 p.m. We also try to make sure to eat a regular meal before we go to the Fair so that we’re not starving and lured into $8 hot dogs.

Since my daughter adores the Fair and we’re likely to have to go more than twice this season, we got the Super Passes. If you think you’re going to go regularly, this might be a good option for you too.

I think the key to having a good time at the Fair is to make sure you see the stuff you care about the most — petting zoo or concerts, rides or the table setting contest — and not spend much time trying to do everything. Focus on your favorites, take advantage of the specials that apply best for your family, try to snack instead of eating a whole meal there and have fun!

If you’ve ever wanted to see the world’s top surfers battle it out at exotic breaks, but don’t know the logistics of where to go or how to get there, then check out this story written by OC Register’s Gary A. Warner.

The Travel story highlights when and where to go, insider tips on how to get there and other things you can do in the various areas besides watching the surfers take on waves.

Here’s a snippet from the story:

Pro surfing loves, needs, celebrates the ocean with its contests. But the ocean doesn’t care. There’s no guaranteed 1 p.m. kickoff. No timeouts. No penalties. No do-overs. A guy’s career might be hanging by a thread, needing a great heat to stay alive, and all the Pacific or Atlantic or Indian can come up with is some ankle-slapping slop.

That’s the allure and the frustration of watching “The Dream Tour.” The ocean can roar and thrash. Or it can act like a lake. Waves can be too small – or sometimes too big. Covered in rain or blown out by winds…

New swell starting to show, 8-footers expected at top spots

A good-size swell should be hitting the coast on Wednesday, with waves in the 4-to-6-foot range and even some bigger 8-foot sets at stand-out spots, according to Surfline.com. The south, southwest swell started to show in Newport Beach this morning, with fun waves coming through in the jetty areas. Check out a slideshow below or click here.

The waves were getting pretty big at Huntington State Beach, where a surfer had to pick up the pieces of his broken board.

Here’s more from Surfline.com forecaster Kevin Wallis:

Waves:

The strong south-southwest Southern Hemisphere swell showing up Wednesday will slowly fade for the second half of the week. On Wednesday, many Orange County beaches will see 4-to-6 foot waves, while the best breaks see waves up to 8-foot on the face.

With little to no northwest swell to break up the dominant southerly lines, expect most beach breaks to see walled shape and marginal surfing conditions.

Caution:

You can also expect a moderate to strong northbound current, along with dangerous rip currents at times, so be sure to check in with a lifeguard before entering the water if you’re an inexperienced surfer or swimmer.

Coming up:

Slightly smaller, but still good size, surf will prevail on Thursday, with the waves continuing to fade in size on Friday. A smaller, but still fun size, south-southwest swell looks likely for the upcoming weekend, with more fun size southerly swell possibly lining up in the long range. State lifeguards up for auction Wednesday

Ruby’s burger and fries for $2.70

This is an annual promotion that you can really get into, if you’re a meat eater, so get out your calendar and pencil it in. Or program it in or whatever you do now electronically. In celebration of Ruby Cavanaugh’s birthday (the mother of CEO and founder Doug Cavanaugh), Ruby’s Diner is selling its Ruby Burgers and fries for $2.70 only on Monday, July 26.

Starting from 11:30 a.m. until supplies last, customers can visit any Ruby’s California location except at except LAX, Shake Shack at Crystal Cove and sporting venues.

Bummer that you can’t get this deal at the Shake Shack, because that’s a fun summer place to stop. But you could go to Seal Beach that Monday, hit some waves and then when you get hungry, head up onto the pier and visit the Ruby’s there.

Newport surfer wins USA title; Kolohe nabs under 16

Newport Beach’s Kaleigh Gilchrist defended her PacSun USA Championship title today in pumping surf at Lower Trestles, while San Clemente’s Kolohe Andino walked away with another under 16 title, but came up short in the under 18 division.

It was the last year for Gilchrist to compete in the contest, as she ages out and heads to the University of Southern California. Santa Ana’s Courtney Conlogue – the US Open of Surfing Champion – came up second in the 18 and under heat after scoring 14.23 in her heat.

“One of my biggest goals surfing-wise this year was defending this title,” she said. “I wanted to go big and get the results.”

Gilchrist – also a stellar waterpolo player - caught two strong waves early in the heat, but then a big lull came between sets.

“That was probably the longest 17 minutes of my life,” she said.

The waves delivered for the event – a mix of south swell and tropical storm brought 4-to-5-foot surf, with some overhead waves under overcast skies.

In a heated battle, Andino lost out in the boys 18 and under division to Florida surfer Evan Geiselman, who scored a heat total of 15.37.

“It’s the best feeling ever right now, I’m really happy,” Geiselman said. “That was probably the hardest final I’ve ever had, everyone was ripping.”

Geiselman said taking the title from Andino – who won last year – wasn’t easy.

”I always want to beat him, it’s always like we have this little rivarly. Surfing against him makes me surf my best,” he said.

Kolohe – who still had reason to celebrate after defending his 16 and under title – said he was stoked for Geiselman.

“He’s a really great surfer. I felt like there was nothing I could do, he surfed amazing. I’m stoked for him,” he said.

It’s the seventh year for the contest, and the first year it has been held in San Onofre. The contest started with preliminaries held on the south side of the Huntington Beach pier last weekend, with the remaining heats and finals held at Trestles the past few days.

The hundreds of surfers came from around the nation, from top amateur organizations in the United States including Hawaii Surfing Association (HSA), National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA), Western Surfing Association (WSA), Surfing America Prime Series
Surfing America Wildcards (includes East Coast and Texas Gulf competitors).
