Seal Beach Annual Arts & Crafts Fair

If you’re looking for something to do this weekend, make sure to check out the Seal Beach Arts and Crafts Festival on Saturday and Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days. The annual Seal Beach Art festival includes about 85 local painters, sculptors, jewelry makers and other artisans who display their handmade creations in Eisenhower Park near the Seal Beach Pier. While you’re hanging out at the festival taking place near the pier, be sure not to miss Seal Beach artisan Seth Wegter’s handmade handbag line called SethBags–his latest collection of artistic, sophisticated purses, man-bags, and other creations will be sure to convince you that you need a brand new bag. Members of the Seal Beach Leo Club are holding a barbecue at the pier from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Please support the Leo’s, as it is one of there biggest fundraisers of the year!

Cheap tips for the OC Fair

Here are tips from my boss, who lives in Costa Mesa, about going to the OC Fair!So Marla , the deals goddess, said at some point last month that going to the Orange County Fair winds up costing her family almost as much as it does to go to Disneyland.

I couldn’t believe that was accurate. I decided she must not be taking advantage of the specials and promotions available at the Fair. So here are a few tips to save you money at the Fair this year:

Parking: I’m lucky because we live close enough to the Fairgrounds to bike over, which saves us money and hassle. So if you live in Costa Mesa or Newport Beach, bike to the Fair. Or park farther away for free and walk over.

Admission: There is no end to the promotions. Hopefully you fit into one of these groups. Active duty military with ID, free admission every day. Kids 12 and under get in free every Thursday. Seniors 60 or older get in half price every Friday. Every Wednesday offers an opportunity to help others and get in free. This week if you bring five canned food items to donate to Second Harvest Food Bank and OC Food Bank, you get in free. Next Wednesday, you can bring a new children’s book or three gently used children’s books to benefit the Orange County Department of Education and BookEnds and you’ll get in free. Check here for all the Wednesday promotions.

Rides: I don’t have teenagers or preteens yet, but apparently this is where you can get into trouble in terms of cost of the Fair. So make sure you go on Fridays before 7 p.m. when all the rides are $1.

Food: We all want to taste the food, but not kill ourselves with fat and cholesterol in the process right?

So the food tastings option is a great way to get small samples of your favorite Fair food for $1.

You can do that on Fridays from noon-4 p.m. We also try to make sure to eat a regular meal before we go to the Fair so that we’re not starving and lured into $8 hot dogs.

Since my daughter adores the Fair and we’re likely to have to go more than twice this season, we got the Super Passes. If you think you’re going to go regularly, this might be a good option for you too.

I think the key to having a good time at the Fair is to make sure you see the stuff you care about the most — petting zoo or concerts, rides or the table setting contest — and not spend much time trying to do everything. Focus on your favorites, take advantage of the specials that apply best for your family, try to snack instead of eating a whole meal there and have fun!

The Seal Beach 5K/10K race committee is very committed to making our annual event one of high quality and a source of pride for our city, as well as for our race sponsors. Our event hosts over 5,000 participants a year, and is an opportunity to run or walk in a well-organized event along some of the most beautiful oceanfront areas on the West Coast. We are a non-profit organization whose charter is to raise funds and awareness for recreation programs, services, and facilities in the greater Seal Beach community. In 2009 we awarded a record $100,000 to 27 organizations across a wide range of community program needs.

The non-profit charter has been in existence since 1999, although the organization has sponsored runs for 36 years. The race has continued to grow in attendance and
contributions every year. The event is planned, managed and executed 100% by volunteers.

Grants:

Per our charter, all organizations that are eligible for consideration must meet the following criteria:
-Non-profit or Charitable Organization(s)
-Provide Recreation Programs or Services
-Provide Recreation Facilities
-Must be Located In and Serve Seal Beach and/or Surrounding Communities

Seal Beach Annual Christmas Parade-2010

The 30th annual Seal Beach Christmas/Holiday Parade will bring city officials, marching bands, organizations and businesses to the Old Town area for a community gathering that draws thousands of spectators each year.

The procession will take entrants in cars, on floats and by foot three blocks down Main Street, from the Seal Beach Pier to Pacific Coast Highway. Up to 15,000 people are expected to watch the parade from the sidelines on a yearly basis.

The parade promotes Seal Beach and local merchants.Nearly 100 groups from in and around Seal Beach will signed up to march in the event, totaling about 2,500 participants. Sponsors for the annual parade include the city, the Seal Beach Chamber of Commerce, the Seal Beach Lions Club and a number of area businesses.

The parade takes place from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3. Street closures will take place from 5 p.m. to about 10 p.m. along Main Street and Ocean, from Eighth to 10th streets. details, visit www.sealbeachchamber.com

The Fish Fry, hosted by the Seal Beach Lions Club, has been a favorite summer event for residents and visitors from surrounding community for more than 60 years! Seal Beach Annual Classic Car Show

The Annual Seal Beach Car Show is held in April every year for the past twenty years and offers the opportunity for the experts to show their wears. Some cars are total refurbished, many are originals, and a load of specialties like the hot rods, army jeeps, and every a collection of pickups are shown! More than 400 hot rods, race cars and other custom classics will line the streets of downtown Seal Beach from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Other Activities

The event includes a pancake breakfast hosted by the Seal Beach Host Lions Club and a pinewood derby competition hosted by the Boy Scouts. Children will be invited to create thank-you cards that will be sent to U.S. soldiers overseas through Grace Community Church’s “Support Our Troops” program. Car show admission is free; city parking lots are $6 all day.

This is the Annual Seal Beach Police Association Polar Plunge to Benefit Special Olympics Southern California. The Seal Beach Police Department has long been a fundraising partner with Special Olympics Southern California . This is annual Plunge and we hope to raise $50,000 for Special Olympics athletes! ALL PROCEEDS will be given directly to Special Olympics Southern California. Because of this generous support, Special Olympics Southern California is able to reach out and provide year round training and sports programs for both children and adults with intellectual disabilities throughout Southern California. Japan-America Kite Festival

Japan America Kite Festival ® is an annual event that attracts over 6,000 visitors. Since its inception, the festival has grown to become the largest kiting event of its kind in Southern California! It also has an international reputation as the most “Family Friendly” kiting event. The Festival is dedicated to educating the general public about Japan and Japanese culture through the traditional art form of Japanese kite making. The festival showcases traditional and modern Japanese kites as well as other kites from all over the world.
