When you are new in a place, it is best to ride transportation that can bring you to different locations without the worry of getting lost. In San Diego, the trolley does just that. If you want to travel most places in the city, you can ride the San Diego trolley. It serves the various interesting places of the city, which include Fashion Valley, Mission Valley, the Old Town, Qualcomm Stadium in Jack Murphy Field, and California Birthplace.
The trolley is operated by the San Diego Trolly Inc. or the SDTI, a Metropolitan Transit System subsidiary.
The Trolley Lines
The San Diego trolley works around the three major lines that are categorized as Blue- Orange- Green. Each line specifies the designation for the trolley. Below are the places designated by each line:
The Blue Line. In the map of this trolley light rail, you will see a blue line. This serves the area of Old Town and San Ysidro, terminating in the Old Town. This line has been on operation since 1981 and cost about 86 million dollars to build. The blue line station at the southern end is not that well furnished compared to other trails as it does not use concrete materials.
The Orange Line. This line operates within the area of Center City San Diego to El Cajon. This line started to operate in 1986 with the initial route in San Diego to Euclid Avenue and was initially named East Line, indicative of the service it provided on the eastern side of the State. It started being called the Orange Line in 1997 and commenced servicing the areas in El Cajon, Bayside, and Santee Town Center.
The Green Line. This line just opened in 2005 and is considered the newest line by far. It serves the areas from Old Town to Santee City. You need to ride the Green Line if you want to go to East extension of the Mission Valley, the western part of the Mission, which was operated by Blue Line previously, and the eastern part of Grossmont Transit Center. Likewise, a stop on the State University is also in this line where you will pass through an underground station.
The Silver Line was planned to open some time in October of 2008. It will utilize refurbished trolleys to be built by Vintage Trolley Inc. It will serve the areas in San Diego downtown to Center City in a clockwise loop. But this will only be operational during midday hours and weekends and not on peaks hours of weekdays since this run within the tracks of the Orange and Blue Line services.
Other Services
Aside from the services of Blue, Orange, and Green lines of the trolley, there is a special event operation that serves the PETCO Park up to Qualcomm Stadium. These services are open to San Diego special events such as sporting events, conferences, and other city-wide affairs. It serves the areas between San Diego 12th and Imperial Transit Center and the Qualcomm Stadium during these special occasions and only runs with the approval of SDTI.
