Are you broke? Well, that doesn’t mean you have to sit home this holiday weekend! Here’s a list of things you can do that are completely and totally free. Gratis. No charge. Libre. (OK, I’m out of synonyms now.)
I’m trying to decide where I will take my kids. I want to go to an art museum, but my 12-year-old son is acting like that’s a fate worse than death.
On the other hand, that’s how he behaved before we went to the Nixon library, and he loved it there. So if there’s an art museum that also has a presidential helicopter, he’d be there in a flash.

- 30th anniversary celebration at the Woodbridge 5 discount cinemas in Irvine
- Go to the free Getty Museum! Parking is $15 but free on Saturdays from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
- California Science Center at Exposition Park is great for kids. The galleries are always free.
- Get a free milkshake at Rubys Diner
- Visit the International Surfing Museum in Huntington Beach
- Participate in a dolphin monitoring science project for families
- Free Civil War reenactment at Knotts Berry Farm
- Free admission and Valentine crafts at the Japanese American National Museum
SUNDAY, Feb. 14 (Oh yeah, it’s Valentine’s Day too)
- Free fishing for kids at Dana Wharf. (Free clinic and then kids free on a fishing trip afterward)
- Free admission Orange County Museum of Art and free activities for children
- Free coupons here for LA Times travel show with free activities like scuba diving lessons
- Get a free milkshake at Rubys Diner
- Free Civil War reenactment at Knotts Berry Farm
- Visit the International Surfing Museum in Huntington Beach
- Participate in a dolphin monitoring science project for families
- Free Sundays at the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach (and free art workshops too!)
MONDAY, Feb. 15 (President’s Day)
- Visit Nixon library and birthplace free today and meet George Washington!
- Famed LA County art museum is free on Presidents Day
- Go to the famous Getty Villa in Malibu, get free advance tickets here
- Visit the International Surfing Museum in Huntington Beach
