Are you tired of traffic congestion and expensive beach parking? When considering a summer vacation at a popular oceanfront resort, such as Virginia Beach, you may decide it’s easier to stay at home.
Fortunately, there is a better and less expensive way to enjoy Virginia Beach during the summer. Take the Wave Shuttle and leave your car at home or at the motel.
Every summer, the Wave Shuttle provides a car-free way to enjoy the Virginia Beach oceanfront and nearby attractions. The cost is $1 ($.50 for persons with disabilities and senior citizens, free for children under 38 inches tall), or $2 for a day pass. The day pass is accepted on all Hampton Roads Transit buses, except the Metro Area Express (MAX). It is also accepted on a popular ferry known as the Paddlewheel Ferry.
The Wave has three routes. All operate daily.
The 30 (Atlantic Avenue) serves the entire Virginia Beach boardwalk: every 15 minutes from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m., between May 1 and September 30.
The 31 (Aquarium and Campground Shuttle) serves the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center, Ocean Breeze Water Park, and several campgrounds. The 31 operates every 20 minutes from 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 a.m., between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
The 32 (also called the Shopper’s Shuttle) travels to trendy Hilltop and Lynnhaven Mall: every 60 minutes from 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m., between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
For a special one-day outing, consider a boat ride on the Paddlewheel Ferry. Take Metro Area Express route 960 from Pacific Avenue at 19th Street (near the Oceanfront) to Cedar Grove transfer point in downtown Norfolk. From there, take the 310 shuttle to Waterfront. At Waterfront, enjoy a round trip on the Ferry to historic Old Town Portsmouth. Your total cost is $5.50 for a Metro Area Express one day pass.
The Wave Shuttle is within walking distance of oceanfront hotels and motels.
If you don’t want to drive at all, Amtrak’s Northeast Regional trains serve Newport News, VA (from Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C.) with a free bus connection to 19th Street and Pacific Avenue in Virginia Beach.

Remember: you don’t need a car to enjoy the beach this summer!
