In the original 1850 state legislative act, the county’s name was spelled Colusi, and it often appeared in newspapers and journals as Coluse. This word was derived from the name of the original Native American tribe that lived on the Western part of the Sacramento River. This was changed to Colusa after several years. However, this information is disputed due to lack of evidence and recorded documents. Up to this time, the name’s origin is unknown.
